Police are blaming icy roads for another accident on South Bend’s southwest side.

Just after 9:00 Saturday evening in the 28-hundred block of Sample St. a two car accident occurred after a woman lost control of her vehicle, possibly after hitting a patch of ice.

Both vehicles were heading west on Sample St. just west of the Olive St. bypass. Officials say as the woman’s car started spinning it collided with another vehicle before slamming into a pole.

Battalion Chief Carl Buchanan says that because of the recent rain pattern the roads are especially slick underneath the coating of snow.

“Be very cautious because of the ice underneath. We all knew that it was raining prior to the temperature dropping, again err on the side of safety and be very careful not just tonight but in the coming days. It's going to be even colder, and it's going to freeze even more, and more of a likely chance for something like this to happen,” Buchanan added.

All three people involved in the crash walked away uninjured, but crews say despite the positive outcome the accident is a reminder of just how dangerous slick roads can be.
