INDOT crews battle wind gusts

The U.S. 20 bypass was closed Friday afternoon between State Road 2 and State Road 23 due to wind gusts resulting in low visibility. INDOT says it will remain closed until conditions improve.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Dept. was dispatched around 1 p.m. after a vehicle pulling a trailer flipped near the Mayflower exit due to severe winds.

"Once we got up here we determined that it was dangerous for everyone to be traveling up here," said
Sgt. William Redman of the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Dept. "Just from my experience today driving on this section that we have closed, you couldn't even see the hood of your car -- and that was only going about 20 mph."

The Saint Joseph County Commissioners have moved the County Travel Restriction Status to an Advisory Level until further notice, citing blowing snow causing hazardous driving conditions.

"Please use extreme caution if you must travel. Avoid travel if at all possible," said a statement from the St. Joseph County Emergency Management Agency.

INDOT has made historic efforts this winter season to combat the excessive snow, ice and winds. Just half way through the winter season, INDOT has almost surpassed the average winter operations total for the entire season.

"The main concern right now is the strong winds and the subzero temperatures," said INDOT Spokesman Matt Deitchley. "That combination -- as the snow blows over the top of our roadways that maybe our plow had just gone by and dropped salt on the snow -- can topple over the top of that treatment and cover it up so much that it becomes much less affective."
