Hundreds show up for Silver Hawks job fair

Hundreds of people packed a job fair at Granger Community Church Thursday night, hoping to snag a job with the South Bend Silver Hawks.

The job fair is one of four planned in the area to help fill nearly 200 seasonal positions at Coveleski Stadium.

"I'm always asked, 'do you have to have experience, do you have to have knowledge of baseball?' And, you really don't," said South Bend Silver Hawks President Joe Hart. "You just have to have a good work ethic and a good sense of pride."

Folks filled out applications at the job fair before sitting down for an interview with a member of the Silver Hawks staff.

The pool of applicants includes many people who are out of work, retired or trying to land their first job.

Many are just looking for a little extra money.

"I'm a school bus driver, so just looking for something for the summer," said Erika Smith, who drove to the job fair from LaPorte. "Sounds like something fun to do and make a little extra money."

But, 24-year-old Nathaniel Davis is hoping to get more out of the job.

He's always loved baseball, but was born deaf.

Davis is hoping to turn his passion into a career by working on the field, starting with the Silver Hawks.

"I like this job because it's very important," Davis said. "It's a very good place to learn how to work on the field."

Davis' dad came along to the job fair so he could translate the interview questions using sign language.

While Davis says he felt confident about his interview, he and the rest of the applicants will have to wait weeks before learning if they got the job.

The Silver Hawks still have three other job fairs planned before opening day.

-Feb. 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mishawaka High School
-Feb. 12 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn's Gillespie Center

The date and location for the final job fair have yet to be determined.
