Hundreds started their day bright and early with a community service breakfast, honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Monday.

Several officials attended including Senator Joe Donnelly, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mike Grzegorek, Police Chief Ron Teachman, and Fire Chief Steve Cox were also among the guests.

Former Indiana State Senator Cleo Washington gave the keynote speech this year.

Karen White, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Services at IUSB, says, “He used to be a city council member and a state representative for the state of Indiana. He understands our community. He grew up in our community and he is a person who understands what it’s like to be an extraordinary person who has done extraordinary things. He is committed to social change so we could not have picked a more deserving person to really kick off Martin Luther King Day today.”

Two of this year's drum major awards went to Mike Hayes with the Mishawaka Food Pantry and Sara Stewart with Unity Gardens.
