How to decode a box of chocolate

SOUTH BEND Business is booming for the candy industry this month. Valentine's Day is the busiest day for chocolate sales. That's why employees at the South Bend Kilwin's store say extra rest the night before the big day is key.

"Generally the week of Valentine's, it just gets busier as the days get closer," said Tricia Wainscott the General Manager. "Valentine's Day has been, the last four years, our busiest day of the year."

Most people can attest to the fact they have given or received chocolate on that special day. A full box is one way to induldge, but all of those options can also lead to confusion when it comes time to select your favorite treat.

To demystify the coveted box of chocolates, Kilwin's laid out a few grondrules picky eaters can use before diving in.

1. Shape matters

"The unique thing about caramels, they're usually squares," said Wainscott. "Almost always, the creams are going to be circular."

"The peanut butter is one that's not always in a traditional round one. You can find it at our store in a diamond shape, but that's kind of a unique trademark for different stores."

"The nuts are usually in some kind of a nut cluster, it's hard to keep those in a round shape," said Wainscott.

2. Keep an eye on the design on top of the candy

"Our line of truffles have unique signature on top of them. So our mocha truffle has a dob of what looks like mocha," said Wainscott.

"The hazelnut might have a little hazelnut sprinkle."

"A striping on top for rasberry will be pink. There are some indicators that you can use to decide which one you're going to bite into," said Wainscott.

3. Color matters

"We have folks that love all types of chocolate, so we carry dark, milk and white chocolate. The dark being a little bit darker than the milk," said Wainscott.

"Dark chocolate has become more and more popular and we are starting to sell more of that as time goes on. Milk chocolate is still number one."

Finally, keep in mind there are other options if chocolate is just too much.

"Our number one seller here, is chocolate covered strawberries," said Wainscott.
