Hometown Kids Jackson, Torres make ND hoops exhibition debut

It was just an exhibition game, but Marian alum Demetrius Jackson and Penn grad Austin Torres made their Notre Dame basketball debuts Monday night at Purcell Pavilion as the Irish defeated Indianapolis 95-69.

Jackson played 21 minutes, scoring 10 points and dishing out four assists. Torres played seven minutes, scoring two points.

Jackson is one of the most highly touted recruits to come to Notre Dame in a long time--let alone the fact that he's from Mishawaka. His AAU teammate Torres will likely redshirt this upcoming season after playing in these two exhibition games.

So, Austin will probably have a nice jab at his good friend by pointing out that he (Austin) actually scored before Demetrius in Monday's game. Of course, moments after--Jackson pulled off a steal sent it to Torres who gave it right back to Jackson for Demetrius' first points.

Jackson did not start, but received a very nice ovation when he entered the game for the first time. He said he heard the crowd but joked that he was quickly focused on remembering what defense he needed to be in.

He said it was pretty cool to put the Irish uniform on for the first time but that it did feel a little weird--since it wasn't too long ago that he was sporting the blue and white of Marian.

Both say its fun to be playing with the other at this level.

Garrick Sherman scored 21 points to lead the Irish. Jerian Grant added 14 and Pat Connaughton had 12.

The Irish played without Zach Auguste (broken wrist), Tom Knight (back spasms) and Cam Biedscheid. Biedscheid, a sophomore, will possibly redshirt the upcoming season after seeing significant playing time last year as a freshman.

With the Irish adding Jackson and fellow freshman VJ Beachem, there may be less room for Biedscheid in the lineup. Brey said Biedscheid actually brought it up and the two will explore the possibility along with Cam's family.

Notre Dame will play another exhibition game Friday night and then open the regular season November 8th at home against Miami (Ohio).
