Homeless shelters offer warm place to stay at night

Michiana got hit hard with a cold snap these past couple of days.

Area homeless shelters have been full helping people find a warm place to stay at night.

At Faith Mission of Elkhart they house more than 150 residents.

When the temperatures drop below freezing the weather amnesty program kicks into place, letting people stay the night and get a warm meal.

“Really the last few days we've had a higher push for the weather amnesty with the weather getting colder,” says Heather Stump from the Faith Mission of Elkhart.

For some it's a sense of security for one night, if they don't have another place to turn.

Resident Arrianna Stewart says, “They have an opportunity to come in and get warm. They get good food, get a shower, and relax.”

At the mission they never turn anyone away, as long as they are cleared by the Elkhart Police Department. The mission says they will always find a place for them to sleep.
