ROYALTON TOWNSHIP A police officer shot out the tires of a home invasion suspect Wednesday, May 22, as the man tried to flee.

Donald Cupery, 40, is accused of robbing a home in Royalton Township.

Based on the victim's description of his vehicle, an officer from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office attempted to question him when he stopped at a nearby BP gas station on M-139 near the St. Joseph Valley Pkwy.

The officer spotted items in the vehicle that he believed may have been stolen, but when he pushed for more information, Cupery turned his front wheels toward the officer and began to accelerate. The officer shot out the tires, but the suspect continued to flee.

Eventually he came to a stop, and officers found that the vehicle had actually been stolen. Cupery was taken into custody without incident and police proceeded to search his vehicle. Inside, they found a pistol underneath the driver’s seat.

He now faces two counts of home invasion, along with carrying a concealed weapon, fleeing and eluding police as well has possessing stolen property.

Cupery is also the main suspect in an earlier home invasion in the Scottdale area and perhaps others in Michiana.
