Hit-and-run driver causes rollover

HAGAR TOWNSHIP Police are searching for a driver, whose reckless actions behind the wheel, led to a rollover crash in Berrien County.

It happened just after 10-30 Wednesday morning along I-196, south of Hagar Shore Road in Hagar Township, Berrien County.

56-year-old Mary Helmstetter says she was heading north in the far left passing lane, when a second vehicle suddenly merged right in front of her. It was so close that she had to slam on the breaks and swerve to avoid hitting it.

Her trailblazer flipped several times as it hit the ditch. Both Helmstetter and her passenger were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle didn't stop to help.

Witnesses say the suspect's car had an Illinois license plate, but there’s no word yet on the make or model of that vehicle. Anyone with information should contact Michigan State Police.
