South Bend, Ind. An effort to save one of St. Joseph County's largest living pieces of history is well underway. So far the fundraiser to restore the historic Studebaker tree sign at Bendix Woods County Park is a success.
St. Joseph County Park Director Evie Kirkwood says all of the letters have been sponsored. The local grant offered has been matched, meaning $27,000 has been raised. But the overall goal is to raise $40,000 to $45,000, which is needed to fully restore the trees.
The sign is on the National Register of Historic Places, and was designed by a Studebaker engineer 75 years ago. Over the years the trees have become overgrown and less defined. With the money, some trees will be planted while others will be removed and shrubs and bushes will be cleaned up.
