Police are investigating a fiery automobile crash that killed two people in southern Berrien County.
Around 12:37 a.m. Saturday, deputies were dispatched to a large vehicle fire in the front yard of a home in the 16500 block of Lakeshore Dr., near the intersection of Stone's Throw Lane.
The New Buffalo Township Fire Department extinguished the fire when deputies found two people deceased inside.
Berrien County crash investigators soon determined the 2012 Volkswagen Passat was driving eastbound at a high rate of speed along Marquette Dr. It's believed the driver blew through the stop sign at Lakeshore Dr., which sent the car into a large tree, bursting the four-door vehicle into flames.
Both individuals, who've yet to be identified, were removed using the Jaws of Life. Medic One Ambulance transported them to Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph. The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy and prepare toxicology reports early next week.
No one witnessed the accident, which remains under investigation.
