A 17-year-old boy with a promising future in basketball is dead. He was shot, on the way to a team banquet.

Marquis Gresham was a senior at Muskegon Heights, which is north of Grand Haven. He was a huge part of the reason the Tigers beat New Buffalo this year at regionals.

Gresham had scholarships to play in college, but his life has been cut short.

A woman living nearby tried to save him, but there was nothing she could do.

“I asked if anybody knew CPR. Nobody did, so I tried to get down there, but he had a lot of blood coming out of his mouth,” Yolanda Tate said to WOOD-TV. “His eyes opened up just a little bit. My husband continued to tell him, ‘just hold on, help is on the way.”

Police don't have any suspects in the shooting.
