Hartford motorcyclist critically injured in afternoon crash

The Berrien County Sheriff's Department is investigating a two vehicle crash that seriously injured a Hartford man.

Around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, Ronald Kimball, 80, of Benton Harbor was driving south along M-63 in Hagar Township. Police say Kimball tried to turn right onto Mizpah Park Rd. when his 1996 Dodge truck was hit by a motorcycle.

The motorcycle, a 2003 Harley Davidson, was being driven by Alan Hatten, 48, of Hartford. According to crash investigators, Hatten was also traveling south on M-63 behind Kimball's truck, but was unable to stop as the 80-year-old turned. Hatten, a 1984 Lakeshore High School graduate, tried to veer away from the truck, but hit it instead.

Hatten, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, was flung from the motorcycle and onto the two-lane roadway. Pride Care Ambulance transported Hatten to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph where MedFlight airlifted him to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Hatten was last listed in critical condition. Kimball was uninjured in the crash.

The Berrien County Accident Reconstruction Team was called in to investigate. This case remains open.
