Elkhart, Ind. Details continue to come in about a shooting that left three people dead, including the gunman, inside of a Martin’s Supermarket in Elkhart.
It all unfolded at the location on East Bristol Street just after 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Police say Shawn Walter Bair, 22, of Elkhart entered the store around 9:30 p.m. He was a regular at the store, according to employees from Martin's.
Bair roamed the store's aisles for 30 minutes, checking his cell phone periodically . A security guard grew suspicious of the situation when he wasn't picking out anything to purchase.
The first shooting took place around 10:05 p.m. Police say an employee of Martin's named Krystle Dikes, 20, was the first victim. She was stocking shelves when Bair used a 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun against her.
He then moved to another aisle where he ran into another employee. They had a verbal altercation before the woman took off running. Bair fired shots and missed the woman. She was able to escape from the store.
Bair then moved to another aisle where he came into contact with the next victim Rachelle Godfread, 44, a shopper at Martin's. Police say Godread was shot multiple times.
Police arrived at the Martin's around 10:10 p.m. to find Bair holding the Martin's manager hostage. Bair saw police coming toward him and began to run. The manager was able to escape at this time.
Police fatally shot Bair in the store. They say he also had a large hunting knife on him, in addition to the gun.
Indiana State Police have taken over the investigation. They say if it weren’t for the quick response of Elkhart police, more lives could have been lost.
