Granger man charged with embezzling $200,000 from SMC

Dowagiac A Granger resident has been charged with stealing more than $200,000 from a Michiana college.

Gregory DeRue faces nearly a dozen counts, including mail fraud and money laundering filed in the Grand Rapids U.S. District Court.

The Niles Daily Star reports, DeRue served as head of marketing at Southwestern Michigan College from January 2011 to May 2013. He's accused of embezzled the money while handling the college's account with his own advertising business, but college officials say DeRue never told him them he owned the company.

He's scheduled for arraignment in court next week.
