Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is thanking the United States and President Barack Obama for aiding Israel, and warning of the threat that Iran poses to Israel's survival.
Netanyahu on Tuesday defended his controversial speech to Congress. He said he regretted that it was being perceived as political.
Netanyahu, who received a warm welcome upon his arrival in the U.S. House, said he appreciated the American aid, including military assistance to build the Iron Dome missile defense system.
He said he had a profound obligation to speak about the danger from Iran and said all efforts must be made to stop it from developing a nuclear weapon.
Netanyahu spoke as the United States and other Western nations engaged in negotiations with Iran to curb its nuclear program.
“As Governor of Indiana, I offer a warm welcome to Prime Minister Netanyahu as he speaks before a joint session of Congress today and encourage every member of the Indiana delegation to attend the address in order to demonstrate the continued bipartisan support for the U.S.-Israel relationship," Indiana Governor Mike Pence said. "The unfortunate talk of a boycott of the Prime Minister's speech only plays into the hands of Israel's enemies when this historic moment gives us the opportunity to demonstrate the deep and bipartisan support of the American people for the State of Israel.”
“It is an honor and a privilege to welcome Prime Minister Netanyahu back to Capitol Hill at a crucial time," said Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. "Israel and the United States enjoy a long and prosperous friendship that transcends politics and is cemented by our shared history, values, strategic interests, culture and religious heritage."
“I agree with Prime Minister Netanyahu that the most direct threat to world peace is a nuclear Iran," Sen. Coats added. "He articulated clearly why this threat is of such significance and why the negative consequences of a bad deal with Iran will impact the security and safety of all Americans. As the Iranians continue their dangerous nuclear activities, it is vital that Israel and the United States stand together to prevent Iran from developing these capabilities.”
