GOSHEN A local community has made the top five of a dubious list - cities with the highest poverty rates in the nation.
Michiana’s News Channel reports that Goshen is 3rd in the nation, with a poverty rate of 27 percent over the past three years.
The median household income is $38,155. Between 2010 and 2012, more than 13 percent of households earned less than $10,000 per year. Nationwide, that figure was less than 8 percent.
Goshen was hit particularly hard by the recession because of their heavy manufacturing population. Unemployment doubled between 2007 and 2012 to 9 percent.
This data comes from 24/7 Wall Street. It does not yet show the economic recovery we've seen in 20-13, with thousands of jobs pouring into the Hoosier State, particularly in manufacturing.
