The Goshen Dam Pond is on its way to greater depths.

The Elkhart River Restoration Association has raised more than a third of what it needs to remove three feet of sediment from the pond's floor.

The Elkhart Truth reports that they have raised $675,000 so far, and once they hit a million, they can start dredging. The project will cost about $2 million total.

The pond was created in 1856, but plants have formed islands in the water over the past century and a half, suffocating fish and making it difficult for boaters to move through the water.
