Granger, Ind. A trunk full of stolen goods was recovered thanks to the work of a Good Samaritan at a Granger gym Sunday.
The man chased down and helped corner the suspects he watched break into a car in the parking lot of the Anytime Fitness in Granger.
Police have advised both the man and the victim, who were both working out at the time, to conceal their identities for their safety.
The man was lifting weights in the front of the gym when he saw a man lurking around a car.
“He smashed the window and then he grabbed her bag,” the Good Samaritan said. “Then I just looked around the gym and was like ‘Did anybody see that?’”
When no one replied, the man immediately grabbed his keys and headed for the door.
He followed the suspect’s car at a safe distance while he called police. The Mishawaka Police Dept. joined the pursuit near the intersection of Douglas and Zappia Rd and pulled the suspect over.
Police recovered the victim’s purse --- as well as other purses, bags, a stack of credit cards and electronics, according to one witness.
The three occupants of the vehicle were arrested for theft and criminal mischief and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.
A 45-year-old Benton Harbor man, Irby Osby Jr., was one of the suspects arrested. He is allegedly the man who broke into the victim’s car in the gym parking lot.
The victim says she could not be more grateful for the act of kindness by her fellow member.
“He did the amazing, right thing,” she said. “I'm totally impressed and grateful about the entire situation -- the guy running out of the gym who just had that instinct out of nowhere.”
The owners of the gym are rewarding the man with a free one-year membership to Anytime Fitness.
“We just think it’s fabulous,” said Owner Michelle Craig. “We want to tell this story and make sure everybody knows how important it is to help whenever you have the opportunity to. We’re so proud to have him as our member.”
