Getting your lawn back in tip-top shape

Elkhart The snow is finally gone and you may be seeing that green stuff in the front or back of your house. Don’t panic, that’s grass. Several of us have not seen grass for quite some time and it may look a little different than you remember last summer.

This morning, WNDU spoke with Linton's Enchanted Gardens Owner Mark Linton to get some tips that will help you get your lawn back in shape.

First, Linton says to rake your lawn. You want to remove all of the dead grass in your front yard. You may even notice some rot or fungus. That is there because the snow has prevented sunlight from reaching the grass therefore making it die.

If you have rot or fungus you want to treat it right away. Linton says you can use a fungicide that will get rid of it. You have to apply it on your entire lawn because that fungus can spread when you mow the lawn.

Next, make sure you have good soil and seed on your lawn. You have the option of getting a sun or shade blend. After you are done putting down soil and seed, just add new lawn starter fertilizer.

Linton says another issue many folks are seeing is moles. Moles are really bad this season but there are easy ways to get rid of them. First, get rid of their food source. By doing this they will start to starve, but you have to be careful because if you get rid of their food source but don’t get rid of your moles they begin digging up your lawn worse than before because they are so hungry.

In addition to that, you want to use mole traps and maybe an artificial worm that you can stick into their hole. They will eat that artificial worm and die.

Timing is key when it comes to having a perfect yard. Linton says now is the time to apply the fertilizer. You really want to hop on the crab grass fertilizer. If you don’t, you will be stuck with crab grass all summer.

Now is also a good time to put in any trees or shrubs. You want to wait until about May 15th to plant any flats of flowers.
