Some students from a South Bend middle school got a taste of college life on Friday afternoon.

About 70 students from the Jefferson Traditional Intermediate School toured Indiana University South Bend campus. They had the opportunity to talk to current students about their experience in college, and were able to take a class with an I.U. professor.

The school opens its doors every year to middle schoolers in the area. I.U. South Bend hopes that the day trip to campus will start the conversation about education after high school for many kids.

Tara Lavallee, a faculty member in the political science department at IU South Bend says that thinking about college early is key to getting on the right track in high school.

“They're starting to realize they are 8th graders and that high school is coming up around the corner and they have to start making a plan for their future so it's really dawning on them. It's setting that spark and that's the whole point of this whole program,” says Lavallee.

Some of the students could become the first in their families to attend college, which is one more reason to get them excited early on.
