Gas promo aims to increase summer blood donations

MISHAWAKA After a scare in June, the South Bend Medical Foundation is hoping to encourage more blood donations through a new summer promotion. Throughout July and August, all donors will receive a $10 gas card to Speedway. During the week of July 4th, donors have an extra incentive- a free cup of frozen yogurt at Frozen Swirl.

The South Bend Medical Foundation says the summer months are typically the slowest for donations. While the foundation did see a scare in June, officials say the need is ongoing.

"The need for blood is constant, it never changes," said Christina Tembo, the Manager for Blood Donor Recruitment at the South Bend Medical Foundation.

"All of our hospitals in our community have a need. Any time there is a trauma or a car accident, the need for blood goes up. But, the need is also constant for patients who have ongoing issues like cancer. They use an enormous amount of blood and platelets."
