Galien River County Park opens this weekend

New Buffalo, Mich. Friday marked the opening of the brand new Galien River County Park in New Buffalo and visitors from across Michiana didn't waste time checking out the new attraction.

The development of the park is thanks to the Pokagon Fund and Michigan Natural Resources Trust.

It's now open daily during daylight hours.

An expansive observation deck allows visitors to the park to share an unmatched view of its namesake river and surrounding marshlands.

"It's a high walkway and you can see the water and some of the wetlands," said visitor Libby Price of New Buffalo. "There's a lower path where you can see more of the wetlands."

Folks from around the area came out to see the new sight, enjoy the fresh air, and even get a little bit of exercise on the hundreds of feet worth of walkways and board walks.

"It's great exercise," said South Bend resident Bob Nichols. "I'm gonna get my body in shape so I'm gonna walk."

Others noticed a subtle sway on the 60-foot tall overlook tower, but said the view was worth it.

"We were up there and I felt a little bit of a sway and I couldn't tell if it was the walkway or the trees," said Sandy Switalski, who was visiting from South Bend. "But once I held on to the rail and I walked out I was fine."

Diane Miko of New Carlisle agreed that it was worth the nerves.

"I have a fear of heights so this is helping me overcome that," Miko said. "But it's a beautiful view."

The park is on Red Arrow Highway across from the New Buffalo Township Hall, just north of US-12, and it's always free of charge.

"There's not a lot of things you can do that don't cost a lot of money," Miko said. "So especially for a family that doesn't have a lot of money, this is the perfect trip."
