Funeral arrangements set for oldest American-born man

BERRIEN COUNTY Funeral arrangements have been set for a man who inspired generations with more than a century of wisdom.

Ethan Shelton was the oldest American-born man in the United States, and he was the 68th oldest person in the world. Shelton was born in Alabama in 1903. He moved to Detroit at age 16, and eventually settled in Berrien County in 1947. Shelton is the founder of Shelton farms in Niles.

He died Wednesday at age 110. Shelton leaves behind more than 130 descendants.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11a.m. at the Berrien Center Bible Church. Visitation is Monday from 4-8p.m. and Tuesday at 10a.m.
