Free screenings for student athletes

OSCEOLA In time for the summer sports season, a Michiana gym is offering free screenings for student athletes.

Rockstar Gym is celebrating what it calls "Student Athlete Month," by providing free Functional Movement Screenings, which usually cost $50.

Trainers use exercises to assess hip and shoulder mobility, range of motion and stability.

"We identify the person's weakest link," said Steve Stahl, the owner of Rockstar Gym. "What this tell us is how prepared they are for movement. We get a number that tells us how at risk for injury they are, and what we can do to possibly decrease that risk of injury and increase their efficiency of movement."

The test is for all ages and abilities.

"For someone who has never touched a ball in their entire life, this will tell them where and how to get started," said Stahl. "If they're prepared for throwing, running, jumping or maybe we need to start more toward square one.

"For those who have been playing athletics for a while, especially those who tend to be one-sided, they tend to develop imbalances and a-symmetries. A lot of our stud junior and senior athletes, they are that way because they learn to compensate. One side gets stronger and tighter, the other side gets looser and weaker. At some point in time something will break down."
