Fred Upton talks gun control and fiscal cliff legislation

Michigan’s 6th District Representative, Fred Upton (R), discusses some of the biggest issues facing Congress in the new year.

Gun control

“Michigan has a system that works,” he says, citing a background check available through local law enforcement. “Other states haven’t done what we’ve done in Michigan.”

Upton says he supports the 2nd amendment, but intends to listen to law enforcement and school officials.

Fiscal cliff

Upton says when it comes to fiscal cliff negotiations, there are three steps:

  1. Locking in tax rates

  2. Spending sequesters

  3. Tax reform

He says step one is complete. However some spending cuts, including foreign aid, will kick in come March. He doesn’t expect to handle any tax reform legislation until summer. For Upton, the main priority is to simplify the tax forms.
