FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) A Fort Wayne police officer is headed to South America to discuss his department's exchange program with police in Germany.

Officer Michael Joyner tells The News-Sentinel he was asked to appear at the three-day meeting beginning Monday in Lima, Peru, by Sister Cities International.

Joyner has been heavily involved with Fort Wayne Police Department's exchange program with Gera, Germany. It began eight years ago after two German officers died after being run over by a truck on the Autobahn. He presented Medals of Honor to the families of the fallen officers, and that cemented a relationship between the two departments.

Joyner said that numerous officers from both departments, including Fort Wayne Chief Rusty York, have traveled to the sister cities to learn about techniques practiced in the other country.
