Former teacher sentenced after sending inappropriate messages to a student

St. Joseph County, Ind. The former elementary school teacher who sent inappropriate text messages to a former student, who was under 14-years-old, was sentenced to home detention for the crime Tuesday.

Eric West was a fifth grade teacher at Walt Disney Elementary School in the Penn Harris Madison District.

He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of inappropriate communication with a child in July. West was charged last October after the girl's mother found the text messages and called police.

He received a year, but 275 of those days are suspended, while the rest of his sentence will be served on home detention.

West will be on probation after the home detention ends, and he has to have a mental examination. He also is barred from any contact with the victim.
