The holiday spirit of giving continues as two organizations join forces to feed hungry families in Elkhart.

On Thursday, volunteers from Feed the Children and Pantries and Kitchens United of Elkhart County distributed 25-pound boxes of food, and 10-pound boxes of personal care items to local families in need of assistance.

The boxes are made so as to help a family of four people for up to a week. Each pantry chose the recipients of the boxes based on need, and then gave out vouchers.

According to Michelle Rose, who works at the Pantries and Kitchen, people began lining up two and a half hours early to pick up the boxes. People who received vouchers were told to arrive at 10 a.m. but some came as early as 7:30 a.m.

“There’s a certain desperation from people when they have to go and ask for help and when they are getting help and if they don't get their early you run out and that's not the case but the fact they have to come and ask for help in the first place is tough for them,” said Rose.

Thursday’s pick up marks the fourth drop for the Pantries and Kitchens group, the food contributed by Feed the Children came from the Elkhart office.
