UPDATE: Syracuse woman leads police chase with child in lap

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Mich. A Syracuse woman is under arrest for abducting her daughter, then leading police on a chase, with the child in her lap.

Michigan State Police say Aubrey Coy, 34, took her daughter during a supervised visit in Kosciusko County, Indiana.

The incident began with a call from The Kosciusko Sheriff's Dept. to Michigan State Police after Indiana authorities were able to ping the woman's cell phone.

She was located via GPS in the area of US-12 and Blue School Road in St. Joseph County, Michigan.

A Michigan State Trooper was able to do a traffic stop and attempted to arrest her.

"He asked her to step out of the car and at that point she told him that 'He wasn't going to take her child,'" said Detective Sergeant Todd Petersen of the Michigan State Police, White Pigeon Detachment. "She put it in gear and took off, so the trooper initiated the pursuit."

Petersen said the child was buckled in the front seat when police found them, but as the suspect fled, the woman moved the little girl onto her lap.

The chase lasted about 7 miles and reached speeds of 75 miles per hour as she drove from US-12 onto northbound US-131.

Police put out stop sticks just outside of Constantine at N. River Road. The woman was forced to stop after two tires went flat. At that point, she took off on foot, holding her 5-year-old daughter.

"Another three miles down the road she came to a stop... then attempted to jump out of the car with the child in her arms and run," Petersen said. "She kind of fell into the roadway and that's when the trooper that was in pursuit of her grabbed on to her. It was a prolonged 2 to 3 minutes to get the child away from her because she had her arms and was squeezing so tightly -- they didn't want to hurt the child."
Petersen says the trooper made the right decision when he chose to pursue Coy.

"At that point you have another jurisdiction saying she kidnapped her daughter and now is in another state," Petersen said. "How do you let that child go with that person and she takes her somewhere and does something to her? I think it was necessary to pursue."

Police eventually took Coy into custody, and the woman now faces several charges, including possession of narcotics and operating under the influence. She will face more charges in Indiana.
