SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Thursday -- one day before the 4th of July -- flag wavers lined SR 933, right outside the WNDU studios.

That's where Bro. Edward Courtney, a man we all knew well, sat for 11 years -- waving flags, protesting the supreme court decision that flag burning is a first amendment right.

“He just wanted to be out here honoring the flag, and his military people and America,” said Arthur Whitcomb, of Holy Cross Village. “It was his idea. He just loved his country. Hopefully he's watching us today and smiling.”

Bro. Courtney died in 2009 at the age of 90.

Now each year, flag wavers carry on his tradition.

A flag pole has even been erected in his honor.
