A little piece of Scottish tradition helped bring in the New Year at Fiddler’s Hearth in South Bend on Monday night.
According to Scottish folklore, the first person to cross the threshold of a home on New Year’s brings with them good fortune in the coming year. This role of the “first foot” is traditionally performed by a tall, dark haired male who brings with him whiskey and coal to the household. Both female and red heads are considered to be unlucky.
This year Newscenter 16’s Mike Hoffman was the “first foot” at Fiddler’s Hearth and he brought the gifts with him through the pub’s door Monday night.
