Fire chief forced out while department reorganizes amidst budget cuts

Wednesday night the fire chief for the Southwest Central Fire Territory, Terry Korpal, was asked to resign or retire. He has yet to decide.

Meanwhile a new chief, Battalion Chief Dale Wedel, has been promoted.

The board president says there was a conflict about the way the department should move forward amidst budget cuts.

Right now the Southwest Central Fire Department has higher property taxes than surrounding departments.

Centre and Southwest Territory merged in 2008. Since that time the amount of territory and revenue from assessed property taxes has decreased.

Board president Tom Lindenman says, “The board, because of these budgetary problems, recognized there needed to be a change mainly because of the difference in opinion about how we should address these financial issues.”

As part of a way to save money battalion chiefs will also fight fires, not just hold management positions.

The board president hopes to see a reduction in tax bills by next year.
