Dowagiac, Mich. Fire crews from three area departments spent Thursday evening battling a blaze that broke out at a Dowagiac medical facility.
It happened around 6:30 at the rehab building next to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital, located in the 400 block of West High Street.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames pouring out of the west end of the clinic. They were able to get it under control fairly quickly, containing the fire to the ceiling area. The facility did suffer smoke damage, but thankfully, no one was inside.
“The building was unoccupied, At this time of night, at the time when the fire occurred,” said Steve Grinnewald the director of the Dowagiac Dept. of Public Safety. “If it was during the day, it would have been fully occupied, but in the evening it's not. Nothing went over to the hospital itself. There is a door that connects the two that was closed. It is a fire-break door, so nothing went through.”
Investigators are still trying to determine a cause.
