ELKHART, Ind.--- One person is dead in a shooting at Deer Creeke Apartments. Police say Anthony Perez, 26, of Elkhart, died of a gunshot wound.

Police were called to the apartment complex located at 2801 Toledo Road in Elkhart County around 10:46 p.m. Sunday. When police arrived at apartment 1102, they found a person with gunshot wounds inside. That person was dead when police arrived.

WNDU spoke with a few neighbors who say they heard a loud bang that shook their house. They say they also heard a woman screaming from inside the apartment. This resident then called 911 and told dispatch that someone had been shot.

The resident says police arrived within seven minutes of the call. He says he was very happy to see so many officers show up so fast.
He says the people who moved into the apartment moved in about a month ago. During that time he says he has seen about four different groups of people go in and out of the house.

After hearing what happened Monday morning, he says he was worried because there are so many kids that live in that complex. He says about 60 kids get on a school bus that comes to that corner every morning.

Neighbor Kristen Crossland says, "Basically they need to up their security here. They listen to their tenants and stuff but they don't really pay attention unless it is brought to their attention."

He says there is no security in the complex and would like to see that plus better background checks to help prevent this from happening in the future.
