An Elkhart man is dead following an accident in Cass County late Friday night.
Edwardsburg-Ontwa Township Police were called to U.S. 12 east of Eagle Lake Road around 11 p.m.
Officers say Matthew Titus, 42, of Elkhart was driving eastbound on U.S.12 when his pick-up truck crossed the center line, striking a westbound semi. A Honda Accord then slammed into Titus' pick-up, fatally ejecting him from the truck which burst into flames.
Based off "evidence" inside Titus' pick-up, crash investigators say alcohol was a primary factor in the crash. A blood draw was taken, the results of which are still pending.
According to the Elkhart County Jail, Titus was arrested in Oct. 2011 for a DWI. He was released from jail three weeks later.
Per Michigan State Police protocol, the driver's of the other two vehicles were given breathalyzer tests on scene. Both individuals, who were also treated for minor cuts, tested negative for any trace of alcohol.
Traffic was blocked along U.S. 12 in both directions from 11 p.m. until 3 a.m. as emergency crews cleared the roadway.
While Titus' speed is unknown, U.S. 12 in the area has a posted speed limit of 55 m.p.h.
