A weekend of violence left two people dead in South Bend. Now, the family of a 20-year-old victim is speaking out.

Jarina Bailey was shot in the 1800 block of Lincolnway West. Autopsy results show that it was a gunshot to the abdomen that caused her death.

Newscenter 16 sat down with Bailey's sisters.

They were siblings that shared more than DNA - they also shared a birthday.

Bailey had just celebrated her 20th birthday on June 1st. The sisters Bailey leaves behind said they could not have imagined that it would be her last.

"I didn't say goodbye to her," said Jaesha Garrett, Bailey's younger sister. "I didn't expect for her to pass. I just told her that I loved her and that I was there for her."

Police cars filled a stretch of Lincolnway West Saturday night marking the area where Bailey was shot. Her sisters said she was headed home from a party.

"It bothers me that people can be so cruel," Garrett said.

"They take people's lives when they are very young and think it is ok," said Jaeonna Garrett-Clark, another sister. "It is not ok."

The family is now trying to move past the shock.

"I'm still in denial," Garrett said. "I'm thinking I am going to wake up and she's going to be right there."

Bailey leaves behind two children ages one and two, according to her sisters.

"They have to go through their lives now without their mom because of the choices someone else made," Tishara Garrett-Wilson said.

While they now prepare to lay Bailey to rest, they can look back at their time with her and smile.

"She was outgoing and outspoken," said Garrett-Wilson.

They said they hope their sister's memory can be honored by finding the person responsible for her murder.

"You destroyed families," Garrett said. "This is not just you shooting someone and going about your life. You're breaking hearts and hurting people you don't even know. I never met this person a day in my life and they hurt me to the core."
