The family of a South Bend shooting victim is asking anyone with information about the 29-year-old's death to come forward.
Dominique Jackson was killed Saturday night when he was driving down the 1300 block of Huey, less than a half mile from his mother's house. He was reportedly on his way to her home when he became the victim of what police believe is gang-related gunfire.
"My first thought was, 'I can't believe they took my baby,'" said Dominique's mother, Annie Jackson. "And, how they took my baby from his baby."
Dominique's one-year-old son will now go through life without a father. Family members say Dominique recently bought a house to fix up for his son and girlfriend.
Now, he'll never get that chance.
"We was going to have a nice housewarming at his new house," said his cousin Tauana Fountatin. "He loved to fix things. He probably would have started his own business or something."
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide is investigating Dominique's death, as well as two others that occurred over the weekend.
While they believe the shootings may be connected and gang-related, police say Dominique had no history of violence. He also wasn't known to be affiliated with any gangs.
Dominique's family says he was an innocent victim who happened to drive down the street at the wrong time. Now they're pleading with people to come forward with information about his death.
"How do you rest, how do you sleep at night?" said childhood neighbor Diane Brazier. "How do you take care of your family when you took someone else's away from them?"
The family says young adults need to stop the senseless violence and think about how they would feel if their families fell victim.
Anyone with information about the shooting should call St. Joseph County Metro Homicide or CrimeStoppers.
