A family has lost their dog in a fire at their home on the 23000 block of Ireland Road, Tuesday.
Portage Fire chief Terry Kopal says no one was home or injured when officers noticed smoke coming from the back of the house, but the family dog did not survive.
The family believes the fire may have started from the kitchen, possibly a toaster. Kopal says they will continue to investigate.
There is severe smoke damage on the inside of the home. The kitchen and second floor are badly burned.
