Families spend Sunday canoeing the St. Joe River

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- More than a dozen families spent Sunday morning canoeing a four-mile stretch of the St. Joe River.

There were so many families interested that some were put on a waiting list.

The trip started near Keller Park, and ended at St. Pat's in St. Joe County.

For many moms and their kids, it was a memorable, fun way to celebrate the holiday.

“Most times, for Mother's Day, you end up going out for dinner or spending the day at home with mom,” said Stephanie Balsley. “My daughter and I love going outdoors and it was the perfect opportunity to put the two together.”

“It looked like a fun thing to do,” said Becky Miller. “I haven't been canoeing in a very long time. They go canoeing at camp every year. I just thought I would surprise them with a little outdoor activity.”

After the canoe trip, moms and their families were treated to cookies and milk.
