The new US 31 opens Thursday, but there will still be some delays.

INDOT says most tie-ups can be expected near the access points of US 31 where drivers are shifted to new lanes.

Crews will begin shifting traffic after 9 a.m. Thursday.

During that time, drivers can expect slowdowns or stoppages.

The new US 31 should be fully open after 1 p.m.

Until then, drivers are asked to use the new access points at Kern Road, SR 4, and US 6 to avoid delays.

As always, watch for road crews as the traffic is moved over to the new lanes.

The major project can be dangerous if drivers are not cautious.

NewsCenter16's Megan Hickey took a trip down the old US 31 to clock the travel times at the four interchanges of the new 31.

Those interchanges are at Kern Rd, Lakeville, Lapaz and in Plymouth at US 30.

Sticking to the posted speed limits, she clocked a total travel time of 34 minutes. She'll be recording travel times for the same interchanges on the new 31 to see how the limited access highway measures up.
