Former Notre Dame student to stand trial for father's murder

A former University of Notre Dame student from suburban Detroit who is accused in the death of his father - also a Notre Dame graduate - will stand trial.

Patrick Mikes Jr., 22, would have been a senior at the university this fall.

He is charged with killing his father, Patrick Mikes Sr., 55, and then dumping his body in Genesee County.

Monday, a judge also ordered a request by Mikes Jr.’s defense lawyer to suppress evidence found by searching his father's home. The father was found dead in a cornfield in August.

That evidence included bloody clothing, a sleeping bag and bedding.

A medical examiner previously testified that Mikes Sr. was hit in the head at least four times with a pipe or baseball bat.

The Mikes Jr. faces up to life in prison if convicted. He has pleaded not guilty, and will be back in court October 15 for his arraignment.
