On Sunday, the Elkhart community gathered to support the Paez', an immigrant family facing deportation.
More than 400 people poured into Northside Middle School to raise money for Armando Paez, his wife Marta, and their three children.
Late last year, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services mailed the Colombian natives deportation notices.
In the months since, the family has hired an attorney to appeal the ruling. However, mounting legal costs have made that a challenge.
That was until Sunday afternoon's fundraiser, where the Paez family received a check for $10,000.
One community supporter, Arthur Decio, says, “There are a lot of things you pray for. I think many people pray hard for [Armando Paez] to be successful, including yours truly."
Those prayers will continue now until the Paez family's immigration hearing, which is set for March 22, 2012 at 8 a.m. in Chicago.
If the court rules against them, they will be deported immediately.
