Elkhart movie theater evacuated due to report of armed man

A scene from a Hollywood movie unfolded at the Encore Park 14 movie theaters along Cassopolis St. in Elkhart. Around 7:45 p.m. Sunday, the city's 911 dispatch center received reports of a man running passed the ticket counter and into a theater with a gun.

Responding officers immediately began canvassing the building with assault rifles and canines. Staff pointed police toward theater six where parents and their children were watching a PG movie.

The lights were turned on, the film stopped and theater evacuated as officers located the male suspect sitting in a seat, pretending to watch a movie. Police handcuffed, detained and searched his person and the entire theater for weapons, but came up empty handed.

Evening shift commander, Sgt. Travis Snider, says the man entered the building while running from a group of individuals chasing after him. That group told theater staff the man was armed with a gun, a claim that turned out to be unfounded.

Elkhart police removed the man from the property, but did not arrest him as he committed no true crime.

All patrons evacuated from theater six returned to their seats once the situation deescalated.
