A portion of residents on W. Indiana Ave. in Elkhart were evacuated earlier this evening after a car drove into a gas meter.
Officials say at around 5:45 p.m. a teen was pulling into the driveway of the home in the 1400 block of W. Indiana, when he hit a patch of ice and slid into the gas meter.
The house was not damaged during the accident, but firefighters say the meter was almost snapped off completely.
According to Battalion Chief Wes Johnson of the Elkhart Fire Dept., evacuating the seven or eight surrounding houses was merely a precautionary measure.
No injuries were reported after the crash, and homeowners were allowed back in their homes after about 15 minutes.
