Elkhart, Ind. There's no longer a YMCA in Elkhart after the parent organization split ties with its affiliate.
The new Youth Community Center says the affiliation with the YMCA prevented it from collaborating with outside groups, but left it at that.
Memberships at the Center will stay at the same rates. The only things changing for now are the types of classes and programs being offered.
By working with organizations like Lifeline and The Crossings, the Center's director hopes to avoid the types of financial troubles that the YMCA encountered.
“I'd equate it to two business people who maybe are in a partnership, one decides to expand and one decides they don't want to,” explains Darrell Peterson the director of the Youth Community Center. “I would break it down to say that the direction that we wanted to head for our community--they didn't agree with that direction and that's what caused the division.”
The new sign for the Youth Community Center isn't up just yet; they say they're working on a new logo.
