Elkhart, Ind. The Elkhart Public Library has a busy week ahead as it will be filled with events starting Wednesday. Wednesday night the library will be hosting a program called “Design a Theme Garden”. Anyone and everyone are welcome to this free event.

It starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. Folks who attend will learn how to design a theme garden start to finish. The program will start with the basics and slowly advance.

The three different designs being discussed are a moon garden, children’s garden and a butterfly garden. A moon garden has flowers in it that will reflect light from the moon. It is a more romantic type of garden. The children’s garden can be anything your child likes and the butterfly garden will attract butterflies.

“It’s a lot of fun. It’s especially fun when you get someone in here who doesn’t normally come. Our author visits are great because they bring a lot of people in,” explains Library Director Deborah Stewart.

On top of that, the “Friends of the Library” are holding their Spring Book Sale starting Thursday. There are more than 1,000 books for sale.

For those who may not know, “Friends of the Library” is a group of people who help raise money for the library. One way they do that is by having these book sales. They have two every year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

In the past, they have bought furniture for the library, paid for landscaping and more.

The book sale runs from Thursday through Saturday. Thursday, the sale will be from 1p.m. – 6p.m. That time is just for “Friends” members.

The sale is open to the public Friday from 9 a.m. - 6p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

“These are books that have been donated to the library that we cannot add to our collection. Either we already own it or it is not something that we feel fits into our selection policies. We also have books that we have weeded from the collection. These are books that people are no longer looking at, they may be a little outdated. The information is still good but there are newer additions out there,” continues Stewart.

Stewart says the library is always busy and has a good amount of other events this week. For more information on those events just click here. The library is located at 300 S. 2nd Street in Elkhart.
