From enormous donations to new business, it’s been a big year for Elkhart.
2013 doesn’t look like it’s going to be any different as Elkhart General Hospital announces a 74 million dollar expansion.
Apparently the surgery unit of the hospital has been the focus of discussions for at least the past 6 years. Thanks to a good financial year in 2012 this appears to be the time to go ahead with the project.
The project includes updated technology and a brand new west wing
If all goes as planned, that means it could be up and running by December 2015.
"This is a huge project for Elkhart, not only for the hospital but I think the entire community,” says Elkhart General Hospital’s President, Greg Lasasso.
The hospital also needed more space, not only in the surgical rooms, but updated waiting rooms, and pre and post operation rooms.
Right now, the staff is working in much smaller rooms, so a bigger area means less chance of infections also.
"Every day our staff has to do things in a 40 year old facility,” adds Lasasso. “That in today's day and age, you shouldn't have to do that. So I think a lot of people are excited about it and actually the whole organization is excited about it since we announced it."
The funds are likely coming from bonds which won't affect patient costs. It will be paid back over a period of years by the hospital itself.
