They may annoy you after they go off for accidently burning dinner, but the truth is, smoke alarms can help protect your family from dangerous situations.

The Elkhart County Red Cross will go door-to-door providing residents with a fresh battery for their smoke detector to kick-off “National Fire Prevention Month.”

They’ll even hand out free smoke alarms to any household without one.

Volunteers will travel to five Michiana counties. They’ll fan out through Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, Marshall, and St. Joseph counties.

Saturday’s events are part of a program called Project S.A.F.E.

Event organizers say last year the group reached 10 thousand homes and hope to beat that number this year.
