ELKHART Elkhart Community Schools’ last instructional day of the 2013-14 school year will be Friday, June 6, six days beyond the original May 29 ending date.
Also, instructional time will be made up by not dismissing students early on the final eight Wednesdays of the school year.
Elkhart students are traditionally dismissed from classes 45 minutes early on those Wednesdays to provide time for teacher collaboration and training.
“Throughout this extraordinary winter, ECS administrators have sought to protect student instructional time,” said Superintendent Rob Haworth. “Despite those efforts, an unprecedented 12 student instructional days have been lost due to brutal weather conditions and we have had to consider all options for making up lost instructional time.”
“This decision was made following much discussion, including the consideration of potential disruption to family schedules, and loss of valuable planned time for professional discussion among staff,” Haworth added.
